continuity

A note at the bottom of the notebook page for the song "Rails" says it marked 228 days of songs written without a missed day, noting this as a "new continuity record." I don't know for certain since I stopped particularly keeping track of it (at this point I'm still making an indicator of missed days but I don't bother to add up days in a row and the weekly "weather reports" I used to post with a little visual key to where things were at is way hell and gone in the past and I don't imagine picking it up again. Maybe the whole little icon thing I cooked up for that isn't even working anymore in the old posting, little broken image icons. Nobody reads any of it so it's hard to get worked up).

But whatever, the point I left dangling up there is that I'm pretty sure this was the biggest continuity number I ever got to in the first or present project and again I find it difficult to imagine hitting anything like it again. I sort of routinely miss a day, mostly every week or two, mostly just outright forgetting to do it. I've never set any particular time for doing it or tried to build anything into my routine to remind me of the task. I think I've said it before but to a certain extent I like that I don't always remember to do this thing I've nevertheless been doing consistently for over 20 years (and after that prior test run of of two and three quarters years). It proves it's not just a mindless habit, whatever else it is or isn't. I still decide to do every day. Most every day.

From the beginning of the first project I decided against "hardcore" mode - the idea that if I missed a day the project would be over, or reset the Grand Count or something. The extent of time and to some degree the accompanying accumulation of raw song numbers was the point of the thing (actually the original point was to be a practice in service of generating material for a very very long defunct and vanished musical collaboration project but that's a whole other tale), and I knew I was just not the type to never miss a day no matter what. So what I landed on was that the project was that there would be a song for each day, and I'd endeavor to write them on their given days, but failing that just make them up as soon as possible. In the first project I actually wrote the missed days' songs in red ink, a popping visual signal. Second round for quite a while I decided to not even keep track, I'd just write them and who cared when. Then, early on in the second project, amidst a general discovery of the degree to which I'd underestimated how all-consuming being home all day everyday with a new baby was going to be, I got into a very deep hole of missed days, to the extent the whole premise started to seriously fray at the edges and I was thinking about ditching it almost daily. Some bloody minded persistence kept me scrabbling out of that deficit.

I eventually took up some casual and less visible techniques for tracking continuity, and slipping into such a backlog never happened again. Once or twice since I maybe got as much as three days behind, almost always it's just one and remedied next day. Though lately I have been... I don't know, I'm not exactly thinking about packing it in, but questioning the whole thing more than in a very long time, maybe ever. 20 years is a long time, enough time to go from anticipating middle age with some apprehension to contemplating old age with a kind of resigned acceptance. I don't by any means assume I'll be around in another 20 years. I mean obviously none of us know for sure we'll be around in a couple hours, but that existential apprehension is different from contemplating this business wrapping up without that necessitating any sort surprising misfortune or tragic surprise. A few years shy of the average, maybe, nothing newsworthy.

Of course it could be sooner than that and still solidly in the realm of natural causes. Not actually making it to the intended 10K mark of project two, due to literally not making it as a biological entity, feels like an ordinary enough possibility, frankly.

It's easy enough to knock off songs of the type I generate these days, but I have to confess, there hasn't been so much satisfaction in it for a while. The grim state of things in the world, the seeming inevitability of continued environmental chaos, of increased concentration of agency to an oligarchic neo-fuedalism. Continuity of what? Continuity for what?

Ugh, give up these interstitial meta-commentaries for Lent. And go knock out an early-afternoon's President's Day song. The current continuity count is nine days.

Say things are falling all apart

You've got a right to your opinion

forget the living in the moment
and taking in my own breath
the easy fixes
just dim lights on a crooked path
trying to prop up the continuity

2.2002 : 10/26/2010 : Winter's Heart

How do I give up at the end of the day?
I try to live up but still I have to put the thing away
And almost every night something plays a trick
And all my clever promises just do not seem to stick
What am I looking for - amazing I don't know
Is it just a metaphor, or somewhere new to go
but the few places that I end at never change
it is no wonder if I feel somewhat deranged
There's nothing new to see but they dress it in different clothes
I asked the angel who the chosen were but he said not those
Oh did I not mention the black angel that haunts my nights
pushing my pen around and getting me in fights
tonight will be different that's what I've chosen to say
I don't known how or why but I'll believe it anyway
as darkness closes its hands around another winter's heart
I will pretend I've solved the riddle and have made a start

2.1931 : 8/16/10 : The Continuity

Is there anything left driving this
besides the continuity
am I still letting dumbass
optimistic daydreams screw with me
I don't see myself
debuting this one on the stage
I don't see much I'm
optimistic about in this new age
Up from the oh's and on
into the tweens and teens
I fear a nasty adolescence
is imprinted in this century's genes
maybe the symbol that I
cling to like a holy grail
if I prop up my sad continuity
maybe the system will not fail

I’m afraid of sudden change
I won’t notice it ‘cause
I won’t remember it
Maybe it happens

And if the continuity fails
number of mutations unknown,
I’ll snap back into the game
long enough to
reset the tone

New continuity record myseriously smaller than the previous one...

I'm pretty sure I'm really the only one who bothers about Continuity, making this confession doubly unnecessary (in that it's not really a confession, just something I never got around to writing about, plus nobody cares anyway) but heigh ho, whatever.

Quite some time ago now, anyway, I proudly announced that I had crossed into triple digits of continuity (being the number of songs in the current project I have written in an unbroken succession, without missing a day) - I think that count peaked somewhere around 115.

Well, as I've noted before I have dealt with some enumeration challenges in the whole tracking arena.  Suffice to say that previous count was bogus - it broke I think somewhere in the 70s or 80s; my continuity tracking is not an exact science, it's a benchmark rather than a "significant figure" and I haven't kept precise records though I have moved somewhat more in that direction as of late.  That unknown (and given the facts above, probably unknowable) number was my real continuity record to date.

Well no more!  I've checked the records and I'm fully confident that the recently posted 105 is the real deal.  Honestly I try not to make continuity a key issue of this project, the central theme of which I deem to be (for now) persistence - a quality that I think comes into its own precisely when your consistency and good habits momentarily fail you.  Do a little searching for songs of the day (or daily anything for that matter) on ye olde internette and you'll find that intention is in ready supply, and generally comes with at least some degree of initial continuity.  But I remain the unsung world champion (as far as I can tell) in this small and modest arena by praying at the altar of persistence and not getting too hung up on the lapses in continuity.

But I can't deny I get a little attached to it when the numbers get up there.  So while - not often any more, but still occasionally - I'll just give it a miss and intentionally skip a day because I don't feel like it, now that I'm attached to my freshly minted, "honest" high score, experience suggests that when I break it it will be a genuine lapse - I'll simply, honestly forget to do it.  That this still happens after all these years is sort of an amazement to me in itself.  And I'll be sorely disappointed when I figure it out the next day.

continuity, once again

Continuity is what I call it when I don't miss a day writing a song.

This is the fuzziest aspect to what is the otherwise bone-headedly simplistic high concept for the projects: write a song a day. I knew at the outset of the first project that if missing a day meant ending the project then it wouldn't last very long. Maybe if making songs and music were the larger part of my life I would be able to keep it continuous except in the condition of extreme duress. But writing song lyrics is something I jam into the interstices of my life and it doesn't take that much for me to miss one. A sufficient disruption of routine can generally do it.

I also knew that if I didn't have to catch up with the missed songs I would very rapidly be working on the "song of the every once and a while" project. I could point you to a number of "I'm going to do X every day, well most days, well pretty regularly, well I haven't done X in 5 months but..." progressions of well-intentioned creators on ye olde internette.

Although some of my favorite songs have certainly been catch-up lyrics, from the project perspective a totally "proper" lyric has to be written on its assigned day. But the only way the project can function (for me) is to allow writing songs on other than the day they were assigned to.

All kinds of hijinks are possible in the context of this single loophole. I could skip a song for six years and write it in. I suppose that if I made some sort of critical tracking error and skipped over a date without properly recording it I would end up doing just that. I could put off writing all week, every week, and jam seven songs in on Sunday. I would be within the letter of the law on the project though clearly in violation of its spirit. That's a funny sort of line to judge. When I wrote the first project I wrote missed songs in red ink - an approach to tracking continuity that was typically literal-minded of me. At some point early in on the second project I decided to stop tracking missed songs completely. Not long after I fell radically behind for a period - weeks, maybe months of songs in arrears. The failure to track continuity may have been a culprit though of course the first-time parent thing probably played a role.

Since I wasn't keeping track I have no idea which songs are which except when some of them reference the situation. I remember clearing the backlog as this Sisyphean task running as an undercurrent in my life, trying to get back onto continuity with the current time line while painfully dragging one tardy lyric after another out of the aether, writing songs backwards from the present and forward from the past and all the time wondering if I could really even stand by the project's central premise any more.

Well, clearly I decided I could... The more this period recedes into the past, the less significant this solitary major deviation from the ideal of a song a day seems in the scope of the overall project. Meanwhile, I started tinkering around with tracking continuity again. My thought was to track just numbers of songs written consecutively and post it weekly - a way of keeping a touchstone with continuity without exactly tracking the provenance of every song as was the case with the red ink paradigm... So I was totting up little hash marks on sticky notes and suchlike but I'd lose track and wonder if I'd missed marking a song I'd written or skipped a day and forgotten to reset the count. I eventually started to grid out what amounted to calendars on the endpapers of the books and without quite seeing it coming I ended exactly tracking the output again and there in the calendar grids a big X for every missed song - back to literal-mindedness again I guess.

Catching Up

And that wraps it up for A Song A Day Volume 2.1 also known as Log Book. Tomorrow we'll kick off Volume 2.2: The Catch Up. As a note of interest it was during this period that I became, for the first time, profoundly behind in the writing - close to the breaking point behind, mired in a backlog of unwritten songs that put the whole concept that I was actually engaged in writing "a song a day" into significant crisis. I recall that I had seriously (and fairly typically, I gather from anecdotal reports) underestimated the demands of stay-at-home parenting, as well that I was engaged in some ultimately not-very-successful experiments in DIY digital self-publishing for money and my whole relationship with writing and creativity in general was very rocky and ambivalent. I wasn't tracking continuity at the time so I don't know how far I really got behind, I think it was somewhere from one to two months, and that it took me the better part of half a year to get back on track. I never get more than a couple days behind these days.

continuity (or the lack thereof)

You know how I know nobody is paying attention to the continuity tracking (including myself)? Because I just discovered (via one of my periodic checks against an elapsed day calculator on the internet) that something like five months ago I started mis-numbering the songs again - I just dropped a round hundred off the total and went along my merry way. Not quite on par with the original numbering mistake set, but still. This is the peril of relentless production - I don't even notice a hundred songs gone missing. In any event every continuity report from April through this week has been a hundred short of the correct number of songs currently written in the second project. Like you care.

2.92 : 8/3/05 : Brilliant Psi Kill

The eyes are blank and silver disks
the mind is geared to desperate risks
the power’s undeniable
the origins are pliable
From far outside the continuity
by way of transmission from you to me
the latest exposition of the magic pill
culminating in a brilliant psi kill
the program of eugenics is long established
the architect who then repented so was banished
the final representative of that rare race
did seven years in lock up then vanished from the place
he reappeared in the mountains of Tibet
accompanied by some old mystic monk he met
who taught him secret techniques of the old resistance
thus set the stage for him to seek his own remittance
he traveled over the world and into space
there to meet his nemesis now face to face
the blind striking the blind in a strange arena
the antichrist versus the child of Athena
If there’s a new mythology this isn’t it
it always falls back into a recursive fit
it passes a little time and fills another page
attempting once again to set the charter of the age

What is the song of the day?
