477 : 7/31/99 : Fungi

The saprophytes will inherit the earth
It won’t be pretty but hey that’s life
After we’ve killed off everything of worth
they’ll happily eat the wages of our strife
Imagine New York with a good coat of mold
what a strange end we’ll come to then
When our wasteful habits leave us out in the cold
but the cycle of life will turn again
We live in a world of invisible spores
rots that creep and mushrooms that rise
they hide in the cupboards and backs of drawers
they’ll be in charge before we realize
Someday in a million million years
sentience will rise from the fungi
They may wonder that my warning fell on deaf ears
What can I say, I’m just one guy

Earth's biosphere transitioning to a new biological order based on fungi always seemed like a reasonable outcome to me. I later discovered the theme had been explored in a speculative context in Hayao Miyazaki's post-apocalyptic Manga Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.
